This is a gateway module for the TotalWeb gateway and it uses their API approach.
While you don't have to use it (they have their own module for Cubecart that uses a Pay Page approach) by using this you gain the following:

1. Customer will never leave your site (professionalism, ease of use)
2. You can hold on to the customer transaction data for later processing (recurring, etc)*
3. Works much faster then Pay Page approach
